LESSONS FROM THE TRAIL: DON’’T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER
This summer is all about living out loud and following my dreams, so that means I am writing and exercising. Well on Friday I went to take a four-mile walk on the Clark’s Greenway and take some pictures for my journalism class assignment. As I am getting out of my car, purse in hand I notice a gentlemen parked next to me. He was taking his bike off the bike rack of his car. He had that grandfather look to him, white hair and white beard. I open the hatch to my car and find a place behind some boxes for my purse, never thinking that Grandpa was casing me out.
How often do we make judgments about a person’s character based on how they look? We assume the woman who looks like a soccer mom would never neglect her children or the young man with the sagging pants is a thug in training. I am guilty of this, I assumed because the man was older and dressed a certain way he wasn’t a threat. He seemed polite he smiled and spoke.
I saw him again about twenty minutes later he was headed back towards his car. I thought to myself, that was a quick ride but I kept walking. When I returned to my car and opened my trunk to get my purse I discovered an empty space.
Beware of wolves in sheep’s clothing.
